BASIC SAFETY RULES
- Safety boats are only provided during official on-water activities and only in the area of the activity in question. At other times, you are "on your own" in terms of saftey support. Use the buddy system -- it works.
- If there is a medical emergency, contact the "front desk" or one of the people wearing a bright orange or yellow saftey vests.
- You must be a safe paddler. This includes wearing a PFD, carrying a whistle, and having flotation in your bow and stern. If you are ever in trouble on the water, start blowing your whistle -- one blast means "attention", more than one blast means "HELP!!!!".
- Alcohol is not allowed during official SSTIKS activities (sorry, its an "insurance thing").
Demo Boaters Code of Conduct
One of the big benefits of an event like this is the ability to try a wide variety of different boats. Most of these boats are custom-built and, as such, are not generally available for most paddlers to try prior to purchasing or building. This opportunity will only exist as long as the boats' owners allow it to happen. You can do your part by following a few simple guidelines:
- Always ask permission of the boats owner prior to paddling any boat.
- Boats should be carried by carry handles, if present, or around the bow and stern if they are not. Do not lift or carry a boat by the deck lines, bungees, or rigging.
- When at all possible, do not carry a boat by yourself. This will help prevent injuries to both you and the boat. If you must carry a boat by yourself, make sure you position yourself at the balance point (cockpit) and be very careful of the bow and stern.
- Abide by all rules that the owner sets.
- If you adjust anything in the boat (seat, footbraces, etc.), move them back to their original position when you are done.
- Discuss what you plan to do (roll, rescue, class, short trip) with the owner. Abide by all time limits and restrictions.
- Return all boats AND equipment to the same spot where you borrowed it, unless you have made other arrangements with the owner.
- Ensure that all equipment is adequately secured prior to leaving it. Do not leave anything where it might be carried away by a rising tide, wave, or wake.
Remember, most of these boats are custom-made and took many hours of hard work. As such, do not enter a boat on land (even just to try the fit) without permission. When you are entering or exiting a boat to paddle, do so in the water. Do not run boats up on the beach or drag them over the beach. If you are not comfortable doing a floating entry or exit, ask someone to stabilize the boat for you.
